in the Graz Region
Glorious Advent
Magic is in the air: a warm glow of light, festive music and the scent of cinnamon and roast chestnuts transform city and country into an atmospheric winter world. The anticipation of Christmas is everywhere to be seen: artfully designed Christmas markets, tasty regional food, handmade gifts and a twinkle in the eyes of both young and old.
In the Advent season, Graz doesn’t only shine with its bright lights, but also with its cultural variety and special moments. Between the alleyways of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, 16 lovingly designed Christmas markets invite you to linger – each with its own charm, all within walking distance of each other, and all unique. One particular highlight is the world’s largest Ice Nativity Scene in the Landhaushof: since 1996, an impressive work of art has been created here every year with some 35 tonnes of ice – a masterful creation by Finnish artist Kimmo Frosti. The Office for Christmas Carols in the Sporgasse is also a special place – with more than 30,000 songs, stories and melodies, it is a unique place for musical tradition worldwide.
Advent magic also awaits in the surrounding area: the LUMAGICA light park at the Murhof in Frohnleiten delights with a lights-based art in a natural wintery setting, and when the Christmas-lit skyline in Frohnleiten is reflected in the river Mur, it transforms into a whole stage of light. The “Tannengrass and Lebzeltstern” event at Stübing open air museum brings traditional winter crafts to life. During Advent at Schloss Piber in the home of the Lipizzan stallions, crafts, cuisine and the famous stud farm provide a festive atmosphere.
Whether it’s an urban Christmas experience or traditional Advent fun – in the Graz Region, city and country merge into a magical Christmastime world.
