Grazertor (Neues Rathaus)

Fürstenfeld

The Grazertor was built in 1565 and was part of the city's fortifications. Until 1857 it was a military hospital.

Renovations took place in 1776 and 1859. The city theater was located in the building until 1945. In 1945, the building was heavily damaged, and the reconstruction occurred in 1949 on the foundations of the first Graz gate, but without the theater.

During this construction phase, works by Prof. Fritz Silberbauer were created in the interior of the town hall. The artist is responsible for the large fresco in the meeting room, a door frame in the registry office, as well as the design for two stained glass windows in the staircase and in the meeting room.

Among the numerous artworks visible in the town hall are also paintings by the probably most significant artist from Fürstenfeld, the painter and graphic artist Karl Mader (1884-1952).

The large fresco painting in the meeting room, a door frame in the registry office, and the design for two stained glass windows in the stairwell and in the meeting room come from the artist. For the consultation room, Reno Ernst Jungel created what is known as the Mayor's Gallery in the years 1948 and 1949, which consists of portraits in charcoal, pencil, red chalk, and oil pastels of mayors and city councilors of Fürstenfeld from the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Among the numerous works of art on display in the town hall are also paintings by the probably most significant Fürstenfeld artist, the painter and graphic artist Karl Mader (1884 – 1952). In the meeting room, stained glass windows donated by the city of Zug were used. The inscription on the "Zuger Fenster" refers to the aid operation carried out after the Second World War for the war-damaged Fürstenfeld.
